The artist : AsheBarrett
AsheBarrett is 51 and never managed to choose between images, sound and games. So he does it all.
The alias, borrowed from an ’80s Belgian comic-book hero, belongs to a creator and art director based in Nantes, France. A life spent reading comic books, spinning records and holding game controllers, building images, stories and worlds, from the first sketch to the last pixel.
His music sounds like the soundtrack to a film that hasn’t been shot yet. Funk basslines, analog pulses, lounge jazz going off the rails, house music running until dawn. When night falls, the voices come in: French, Arabic, German, Mandarin, Italian, Spanish. Angry French rap meets Italo disco; Berlin techno shakes hands with oriental electro.
His first release comes in two sides, like a record you flip over. Side A: eleven instrumentals for the daytime. Side B: ten songs for the night. Both were born for GoatBlob, a mobile game he dreamed up from start to finish — but they work just as well without a controller.
New tools, AI included, are to him what video games were as a kid: a new playground. The instruments change, the urge stays. Creativity is everywhere.
